Based on the ads I am thinking Duo Wind fits best.

Well that does muddy the water.  Is there a Thayer ad for 1951?  Maybe that one needs to be changed to Duo Wind so there is a consistent cut off year for the two names?

He said the case is L1.  The movement is L3.  Makes it a tricky one.

Based on the case date it would be a Duo Wind. If it was released a year or more later (which the newer movt may or may not suggest) it would have been possibly boxed and sold under the new name, but that would indicate a serious lag in production. I suspect that a lot of these wider date spans are caused by authorized repair shops receiving a replacement movt from Bulova. It could also be caused much later by any watchmaker wishing to restore the watch.

It's important to remember Bulova produced huge quantities of watches, and it's hard to imagine what might have been happening behind the scenes.

It may also be possible that Bulova would hold back runs of less popular watches and ship ones that were hot. Maybe the re-naming of these is an indication of this?

Just a thought.
