The Whale appears on several models beginning in the late 1960's ('68?) through the early 1970's. A common mis-conception is the Whale was limited to the 'SEA KING' model, We have learned it was not.
IMO a Whale insignia indicates a 'Waterproof' Case.

The whale first appears in 1969, and actually indicates the watch is water resistant.
All but three 1969-on ads describe watches as "water resistant", as opposed to "waterproof", those three ads may be using old depictions to sell old stock.
No ads post-1969 for Date Kings, no ads for Date Kings with a whale dial. No ads for watches with whale dials describing them as "waterproof".
I think the Date King is phased out in 1969, and we begin to see lots of Sea King ads and some have date windows.
This watch is possibly either a Sea King or a type of Clipper.

The direct link to Bulova and the Whale would be the watch case factory located in the whaling community of Sag Harbor.
