It appears that, just like with the Bulova association with the house of Dior, these Longchamp watches were made for the French luxury goods company of the same name.
After seeing the "stirrup" logo on this watch's box, I found several indications of the company using the stirrup as their logo today, along with "1948", the year the company began.

Here is the company site, where many items can be seen to use the stirrup logo.

And let's face it, there is a Longchamp horse racing course of the same name in Paris.
Yea I see we have several close but different "Longchamp" models in our watch database. One is solid 9k gold, one is 20microns gold plate, Jabs example has slightly different lugs/case back stainless, and a newer 1979 model is Oval in shape.
Like Bobbee and OldTicker said, I'm thinking Longchamp may be a series, similar to the Dior line. Each one may have either different variant letters, or different unique model names to make the solid gold version sound like its worth the price difference. I don't know their marketing scheme.
Longchamp works for all of them for now.
