Looks like Bulova did put diamonds on the AA's.

Last paragraph, far right of this article from March 1950.

It says you can get a case richly studded in diamonds. That could mean the ladies Academy Awards models that have diamonds on the case.  Who knows?

The case date is listed as a 1950 although I don't see anyway to confirm that. But the movement is stamped 47. So that would indicate a movement swap. I'm thinking possibly a complete movement with dial and hands were swapped.
