I found that odd too; the lapse in time between manufacture and presentation to my father that is.
I spoke with my parents today and gleaned a bit more info: The watch was definitely purchased in Elgin, IL. This is where both of my parents are from; at least from teen years forward. (my mom worked at Elgin watch, so I have an interest in those as well)
It was likely purchased at a store named "Kresge" in Elgin.
My parents seem to think it is most likely that the watch just happened to be in Kresge's inventory for that full amount of time until it was finally purchased. No way to verify, unfortunately.
Just figured I'd add that tidbit, as I always find it interesting to read about how others' watches ultimately made it to them.
Thanks again, great site BTW admin.

Actually the inventory story makes perfect sense. I have no doubt that is exactly what happened. Knowing these stories are what makes the family heirlooms even more special. What did your mother do at Elgin? Incidentally, SS Kresge opened his first store in Detroit, Michigan in 1899. In 1977 the company was renamed K-Mart and is still in business today.
