Watch Description

This is a seldom seen model and only the third for the DB.   Based on the date of the watch and date of the engraving it would appear these did not sell well.  This appears to be a 1950 Bulova Baxter.  it is a 10KT Yellow Rolled Gold Plate case and case back.  The movement is an 8AC 17Jewels with a A9 date code.  The date code on the case back is L0.  The dial is pristine and is two tone with a taupe center and raised yellow gold applied hour markers with printed yellow gold roman numbers on the quarters.  Has an original leather strap with a gold filled buckle.  Really cool engraving on the back.  "TO JAMES GOOD LUCK FROM ALL OF US IN R.H.D. 1-23-53".  I looks like it was not worn very often.

Nice one, Jim. This does seem to be a fairly scarce one, well found! Isn't it rewarding to find one with your name pre-engraved on the back? Love the inscription. I would guess the similarity of this model to the Academy Award "R" and lower jewel count (17 vs 21) might have something to do with not seeing them often. AA had the name recognition as well as an ad blitz.

Yes having it engraved with my name is a bonus.  I have to say the dial on this model seems to work much better stylistically than the Academy Award.  The liner case lines blends well with the Roman and pyramid hour markers on the dial. It also is a larger watch that I expected and the case is interesting in that it appears to be cast and the back machined out.   Much different than the pressed cases we see around this period.  The cast case also has some real weight to it and is much heavier than you would think.  I almost thought it was solid gold due to the weight.

The Baxter... so happy we found that ID.  Such a cool watch.

My father (who would have been 4 in 1950) just gave me what I think is also a 1950 Bulova Baxter. He said it belonged to his father. Its dial has some darkening/surface wear in the corners, but all in all, it's a nice watch to wear and keeps pretty good time. I wind it in the evenings and in the morning. I'm not sure how to check the movement details. Opening the back the dial and movement remains attached to the back. When I received the watch, it had a torn genuine lizard band. I replaced it with a new Speidel lizard grain leather band but may yet get a genuine lizard band. Lizard grain isn't quite as nice the real thing. It has an L0 marking on case and perhaps is a bit earlier than JimDon5822's 2879651. The number on my example appears to be 2879488.

Hi Specialmonkey. That's a beautiful Bulova. The fact that it's now been worn by 3 generations of your family makes it very special. You should consider adding it to the data base here: Create Watch | myBulova.com

That would allow more members to see your watch and and allow it to be more easily found as a reference to identify others like it.
