I am unsure of the actual date of this watch. It belonged to my grandfather and he never spoke much about it. The band is not original.

A grandfather's watch is a wonderful heirloom, congratulations to you Poppie. I agree with Ken that the case resembles the Ambassador Douglas line of the mid 40's although they're listed with 21 jewels, not 17. The dial on the Beau that Jaroslav posted is very close match to this one but the case is different.
I wonder about this advert showing a solid gold Director in 1946 (and for that matter, a Douglas too) . I recognize that the jewel count is off but I think the first step in ID is the case.......
I think the case does very much resemble the Director (or possibly Douglas) in 14k, but what we very likely have here is a Beau or something like it residing in the case.
It's all-Bulova, but possibly an opportune swap at some point in its long history. There is nothing untoward about this, watchmkakers and customers wanted their watch fixed, and long after the warranty expired, that was the goal, regardless of 'originality' of the piece. Nowadays, we are focused a bit more on the original spec due to collectibility, and for the record.

Wonderful, thank you so much for all the information. That all makes some sense.
With all this in mind, I am a bit curious about the potential value of the watch. I have no intention of selling it, but the curiosity is certainly present. Do you have any guesses as to its potential resale value?

Thank you and the entire panel for your views and information! Out of curiosity, how much do you imagine a non-conforming watch with these parts might be worth? The watch is of higher sentimental value than financial value regardless of the answer, but this sort of information is always interesting.

Hi Poppie1, We don't give values on this site. There are just too many variables to the vintage watch market. As you say the sentimental value is priceless! I would recommend searching on ebay for a couple of weeks. It will give you a general idea of what the market is doing.
