I have a 71' Spaceview cushion case. Its keeping great time, but the second hand runs and stops periodically. What is most likely the issue?

From what I understand about the Accutron, or any mechanical Watch for that matter.
Over time the lubricants in the gear train begin to dry out causing more resistance than the force to move them can overcome.
The Accutron is unique (if 214) as an Index and Pawl spring move the Index wheel which turns the train. Eventually the tuning forks will continue to hum (work) but the Hands will stop completely and if left in this condition damage can occur to the electronics or Index Wheel .
Remove the Battery.
The Watch is in need of Service would be My guess.
