Nice find Mark,
I have never seen the engraving pattern or my eyes are shot. Dial is at least 1927 and 8 months with the closed 9. What is the case PAT date? Movement looks like an AF. Check my 1925 President in the data base, it doesn't have a second hand. It does have the Presidental rectangular type case.
I'm thinking mid to late 1927 Magnolia and again
In reply to Stephen & Mark I have a pair by Wayne Hanley
Wayne,
I'm honored, but that question is way out of My league. I would assume if the movement ligne are the same so would the length of hand? As far as looks go, well we'll just point that little difference out to You once You post the pictures. Haha!
Bar across the Hour hand may be 100% correct.
Stephens dept.
I've seen 1925/26 Bulova ads that show both the spade style hour and minute hands with and without the cross bar. So in my opinion both would be authentic. However the hour hand shown above shows the lower half as solid (am I seeing this right?) and not something I've ever seen before on a Bulova watch or advertisment.
These are the only 2 watches I can find that match the case style (although the Dictator is very curved). the President came to mind but its sides are continuous unlike this one which seem to be slightly indented.
Stephen,
The Hour hand is framed all the way around, paint in the center as in the Minute hand showing but is a little dirty giving an illusion of being solid (see the first pic.)
Differences in both the dials, note the 6 numeral is completely obscured by the sub second dial, which is placed much lower on the unknown and case face patterns in the above lead Me to believe this watch is neither and remains a mystery.
*as an added note and recent observation may I point out something on the cases.
In the artists renditions, specifically where the horizontal sides of the face meet the verticals there is a line, this line appears to Me to indicate that the case will slope inward at that point to meet the glass, as shown on this late 20's Dictator:

Comments appreciated.
I don't believe it's a President case. Study the ads for the President from 1924 to 1930. All of the ads & my 1925 & 1930 watches have curled lug ends. The second & thirds pictures above show the lugs end at a sharp angle. The angle somewhat similar to the Magnolia ad that Stephen is showing. Also the 13AF movement would be an exception for the President. From 1924 to 1930 Presidents were powered by 9A or 9AT movement. Very beautiful and interesting watch.
