Watch Description

Case measures 38mm lug to lug x 32mm wide non inclusive of the Crown using Calipers. Original Black 'Cross Hairs' Dial shows applied Gilt Hashmark Hour markers and Bulova signature, track is printed in Gold with luminous accents on the Hour. Hour and Minute Hands are Gilt Alpha style with lumious accent, sweep center Seconds Hand is Gilt and a Date Window appears at 3 O'Clock. Crown is original. Stainless Steel Caseback is held by a retaining ring and stamped as shown. * Completely restored.

Do you have an ad showing this 1971 watch as a Date King? Latest ad  for a Date King is 1964. that's an awful long stretch. It doesn't have the same case design!

Sure is a stretch Wayne - and You know My opinion of the 'Red ad'. lol

Here is a 1965 version, same case design, same case style, same movement, same Hands, same Dial minus the 'Whale' - identical.

The Red ad names this Watch a 'PRESIDENT' which is obviously a typographical error and has the descriptive text and image mixed with another Watch in the same advertisement and should be named the 'DATE KING'

IMO the 'SEA KING' of this era is the same Watch - minus the Date window.

Mark, I'm still not sure what your basis is that the red ad is incorrect?

If its the fact the it shows a 17J President, it has already been proven that they did exist.

My gut is telling me that your watch in question is infact a President and not a Date King. The cross hairs seem to be a common theme.

Everything matches pretty much, except the whale which I'm starting to think Bulova introduced in the later 60s, early 70s to indicate waterproof on their watches. They already had automatic. Here in yours we see the combination on both automatic and waterproof.

Our ad base from 1966 on up is sadly lacking. We need to advertize for some Bulova Jewlers Catalogs, Supplements & advertisements especially 1966 to 1970. Maybe Scott can name them with the crystal catalogs, ya recon?

The 'PRESIDENT' in 1964 was a 30 Jewel auto - all of the ads in the existing ads in the database concur, except this one.

The 'PRESIDENT' was 17 Jewels, in 1955 - 1960 but manual winding and with a sub second dial - all of the ads in the database support this also.

It's My opinion, based on the existing ads and common sense that the Red ad has a printing error, something not uncommon, and should read 'DATE KING' for the Watch shown and the Watch shown as the 'DATE KING' in the same ad should read 'PRESIDENT'. (30 Jewel auto w/ Date display) concurring with the other ads from the same period.

I gotta read about the fiasco linked above, but the ads indicate same model name over years w/ whale appearing at a later date.  Don't remember which, but yous folks probably know of the tops of your heads.

The Whale appears on several models beginning in the late 1960's ('68?) through the early 1970's. A common mis-conception is the Whale was limited to the 'SEA KING' model, We have learned it was not.

IMO a Whale insignia indicates a 'Waterproof' Case.
