Watch Description

i received this watch from my father who received it from his father.  I believe that since it say L4 on the back, that it is from 1954.  Can this be confirmed or is the watch older than that?

Welcome, and thanks for sharing your heirloom. L4 does indeed signify a date of 1954.

Your watch is a  1954 Cambridge, as seen in this 1956 ad for 1957.

Just like this one, right down to the star on the dial under "Bulova"

Congrats on a fine heirloom, 1954 Bulova Cambridge. Make sure to have it professionally serviced if you plan to wear it.

there is a scratch on the front/crystal. are there parts available to replace it?

also, it occurred to me that i should probably add it to my insurance policy. what is its approximate value?

A qualified watchmaker is likely able to source a replacement crystal if the scratch can't be buffed out. We are not qualified to give appraisals but do recommend researching online auction sites to get some idea of the value of your watch. As a family heirloom we consider it priceless!

Agree with a 1954 Bulova Cambridge.  I find interesting that there is a star below the Bulova name.   I don't think I have seen this before.  I am thinking this might have been a way for a local jeweler to mark watches they sold.
