The band on it is referred to as a scissor expansion. They were popular in the 1940's and 50's until they fell from favor and were gradually replaced by "Twist-O-Flex" as invented by Speidel and introduced in the late 1950's.

I appreciate all the knowledge! And yes it opens up like a scissor makes sense now! I wonder how hard it would be to find a leather band for it? I guess I could get a modern one for it and keep this band just in case I wanna switch back

Not hard at all. All you need is the measurement between the lugs for proper fit. Check online auctions if you want one (leather or metal) that looks proper period on the watch. Take note that the metal bands currently made probably won't color match because they aren't gold plated. Personally, I would wear it and enjoy it as it is. It's a 40's watch on a 40's period band and as Poppop wore it.

There were a couple of President variants using this style Y-GF case and dial; 'A' had the leather strap option, and 'D' had an expansion band, 1948 example. Since we don't know which type of band this watch came with originally, perhaps we designate the 'A' variant. From what I can tell, the current band looks to be a later type, similar to a late 50s Craftsman band.

This 1943 Bulova watch advert shows that the President model in this form was around for a while.
