Additional Information

Here is one that is right on the cusp of a name change. It's white gold plate with a grey dial. I find ads dated 1947, showing this dial in Princeton. It appears this one is right on the line, with Princeton in 1947 showing this dial as well as the Gothic number style.

Model became His Excellency in 1947; but ads for the HE in 1947 and after only show the Gothic dial and an .even number only face different from subject watch. Based on the face and color combination, as well as the 46 movement in a 47 case, I am thinking this is the

Princeton "C".

Both ads referenced are dated 1947 with one referencing white, yellow and red gold variants by letter designation and the other showing the face design of subject watch.

It's a non-runner missing the movement spacer ring and slips when winding, but I couldn't help myself.

First ad in color shows this face, second shows even numbered face seen after the model name change.

I am inclined to believe this should be a 1947 Princeton based on the dial style.  I do not believe we have any ads that show a 1947 case with this dial configuration.  It would appear as you suggest this was a transitional watch before the switch to the His Excellency.
