Watch Description

This looks like it is one of the Golden Clippers, screw-in ring on caseback, gold-plated mvmnt. with date, but manual not automatic, big case, 41mm. long, 40mm. wide w/o crown, 18mm. lug gape. Big hunk of a watch, unusual blue batons and hands and unusual circular dial with blue horizontal line and horizontally striped background. Expanding fixo-flex bracelet looks original as it is used on other Bulova's, like on the number 7 "luminous" watch in image 33, page 11.

First Visit to the U.S. Library of Congress

Submitted by NOVA on May 24, 2012 - 12:42pm

I finally went to the U.S. Library of Congress yesterday, which is just 25 miles from my house.  For anyone not familiar with the Library, it is located in Washington, D.C. near the Capitol, and encompasses three large buildings connected by underground tunnels.  Most of the collections are open to the public.  All that is required is registration with a photo ID.  There’s much more information about the library available online at the Library’s Web site, if you’re interested.

Updating an Accutron Spaceview

I have a 1967 Spaceview that will not run properly with modern batteries. From the web I have learned there are a number of people who fix this problem, but there are a number of approaches. One is to replace the innards with newer parts; I do not want to do that. Other approaches involve putting a resistor in to fix the voltage level. I would prefer the latter, but am hesitant to send the watch off without having some independent references as to the honesty and quality of the repair person. Does anyone have experience with this?

Another Buckingham

Well, pursuant to my earlier comments on the previous Buckingham Case thread, I finally convinced my buddy to part with his last night at a local watch meeting in Rockford. (If I do say so myself, I think this was a textbook example of the art of gentle persuasion, but that's another story. Suffice to say I have been working with this guy for two years.)

Anyway, here it is:

Watch Description

Inheirited from my wife's grandfather.  Came with the original mesh band, but it was too small for my wrist so I had a jeweler replace it with a similar, larger one.  It's in great shape, but needs a small amount of maintenance...it loses about 2 minutes per day, and I think the winding stem may have a slight bend - it's a little sticky when winding or setting. Anybody have references for a reliable, reasonably-priced service for a tune-up?  It took me a long time to figure out exactly what I have, and now I'm a little protective of it.

Identifying / Valuing a bulova Astronaut

Submitted by brice behringer on May 22, 2012 - 1:39pm

Hello.

I recently found my father's old Bulova Astronaut.

First, I'd like a positive ID on this watch.  The number suggests 1967 manufacture but can't figure out the serial number.  Where can I find more information on this watch?

Second, the crystal is pretty scratched up.  What would be the value of this watch and is it worth getting it repaired / cleaned up?  The battery is the old Rayovac but I don't think they make it anymore.  What is the best replacement battery?
