Bulova cal. 10AN 21 jewel movement

Submitted by SKwatchfan on March 9, 2018 - 5:35pm

I am very familiar with the Bulova cal. 10AN movement in its 15 and 17 jewel configurations, as I own and have serviced several Bulova models with this movement.   But I recently purchased a Bulova in an Anchor step-sided gold-filled case with a 21 jewel cal. 10AN movement.  The cap stones are friction fit, not screwed down, and the movement is marked "6 adjustments", which would lead me to believe this is an unusually high quality of finish for the cal. 10AN.  Interestingly, the movement does not have a date code (unless it's on the dial side - I haven't yet dismantled it for cleaning and service, as it's running well as is).  From the style of the case, I believe the watch dates from circa 1932-1935.  Can anyone shed some light on this particular configuration of the cal. 10AN, e.g. what Bulova models it might have been used on, when and how long it was it in production, estimates of production quantities, or anything else that might be of interest.  Thanks for your input!

Manufacturing numbers of these early movement probably no longer exist.

We have a movement register that is hoping to capture the numerous movement models made by Bulova. It's a tall order and we are probably only a fraction of the way there, but it's something.

There were indeed a number of 21 jewelled 10AN/AE movements in use within various models throughout the 1930s.

The Bulova 1930 Conrad, 1931 Edwin, 1934 Kirkwood, 1934-39 President, 1935 Breton, 1936 Galahad, 1937-39 Ben Hur, 1938 Calhoun, 1938 Broadcaster, 1938-39 Amabassador, 1938-39 American Eagle, 1938 Dewey, 1939 His Excellency..

Cab you post a picture of your movement here: http://www.mybulova.com/bulova-movement/10an

Production apparently ceased in 1937 and there was even a 7 jewel model.

Thanks for all the uselful information; I now feel much better informed on the cal. 10AN and 10AE!

The movement register sounds like it will be a wonderful resource, given the often bewildering number of Bulova movement calibers.  My "wish list" would include an interchangability list between various calibers for common parts like winding stems, balance staffs, mainsprings, hairsprings, crowns, hands, etc.

Again, thank you for your help.

Click on the information box at the top of the page and then click on the Bulova catalogues  and you should find some info on interchangeability of some parts
