Watch Description

My Saturday morning project today was finishing this one. I finally got a new set of hands for it after 6 weeks of effort. The movement actually has a "circle" and a "triangle" date code. I started out with this non-running wall flower.

And after a little love and attention it blossomed into this and is running nicely now.

I just love a story with a happy ending. :)

Remarkable, what a little elbow grease can do, nice work Alan. Fun little twist with a double date code, don't see that too often. I do believe it should be dated as 1945 on account of the triangle.

I don't think it's an "Arnold".

The "Arnold" has a 15 jewel movement and the lugs are different from the one I have. The case on the one I have is shaped like the "Stamford" and "Aviator" but with engraving and it has a 17 jewel movement. Donegd thinks it might be a "Norman". I didn't find a "Norman" of this age in the data base to compare it to.

Hmmm, case dated 1944, movement double stamped 1944/45.

If both case and movement were manufactrured in 44, but part of unsold stock, or perhaps sent back to Bulova for repair or swapped out by Bulova under warranty, it would make sense that the watch was possibly resold (well the movment anyway) in 1945. So I'm good with 1945.

All adverts lead to this being a Bulova Arnold with a replacement movement as every Arnold advert says 15J.

Maybe this photo from the side will show that it isn't an "Arnold" case.

Was it just a really dirty crystal or have you found some magical substance that almost restores dials?

I've got a few NOS dials and one fit this watch. I put a new crystal on it too. I wish there was some magic in a bottle that would fix dials. It's ridiculous what you have to pay for a paint job the size of a postage stamp.

Good job with the ad for Norman.  I'm onboard with Norman and 1945 date.  Great cleanup job!!
