muttiboy - Regarding the date set. Bulova used a couple different methods (including the totally wierd Accuton method) of day date setting. That I can think of
1. Half stop pull out - toward you for date away for day ( or is it the other way.....)
2. Quick Set - Full out stem setting advancing time sets DAY - pushing the stem full in and then a quick click full out advances the DATE. Seems like on some of these you can wind forward to 3 AM and back to 8 PM to skip the full 24 hour advance - for setting the DAY - still have to click in and out to sert date. My guess is this is what you have.
3. Date only - Back and forth between 3 AM and 8 PM to advance date
4. Date only - Wind time forward untill you have a blister (this could be just the Caravelle models)
5. Take it to your watchmaker and pay him to do it.
6. There must be another, I just can't think of it - I am not going to explain the THREE ways I can think of to change day / date on an Accutron.
BTW - you already figured out the 1971 part and 5th gave good advice on the mvmt. The Oceanographer was one of the premier Bulovas of this period - these were considered the higher quality Bulovas of the day and quite popular. I'm big into this Bulova era, you have a very cool watch!!

thanks. It needs at visit to a watchmaker. I can adjust the time/date. it just doesn't change the date on its own. I have to change the date forward each day. but, once done remains relatively accurate throughout the day, again until 11:30 pm where the minute and date functions stop. the second hands keeps moving.
