Watch Description

1963 Bulova Craftsman "D" 21J 8AC with a M1 date code, 10K Gold filled bezel & caseback, Silver dial with Gold applied numbers/markers and Gold hands, Leather Crocgrain strap. The ID is tentative, but nothing else in my newer crystal books lists a square 19.3 x 19.3mm crystal, and the 21J movement/Gold filled caseback is consistent with the Craftsman model watches. The bezel on this one is quite unique for a early 60's watch.

Interesting the crystal package names " D, E, F, and G". I'm very familiar with this watch. Comes in both yellow and white gold plain bezel, yellow and white gold patterned bezel. Dials can be plain, white or black. I believe they were also available with the linen texture as well. This is very much the same situation we have with the "American Aviator's" we've been dicussing. Same era of production too.

This Watch could be 'D' 'E' 'F' or 'G' variant at this point so why not just name it a 'CRAFTSMAN'?.. or is there an ad?

I thought of adding it as a generic Craftsman Mark, but the style is very different than the examples we have in the database, it is a tentative ID, but the square crystal should put it as a 2 star "D" for now and let everyone know that this is another to try to prove or disprove.

As Shawn mentioned, another "can of worms" is open for discussion....; )

BTW...I have a couple more to post that will make you scratch your head...

What is the number stamped inside the case?

I think it's the Bulova crystal number.  We see in several "newer" Bulova watches.

OT, what is the actual # printed inside the case back?

The printing is faded, but it looks like 1171P, and stamped in small numbers running through the center of the printed numbers is 2338 which might mean something too.

'UNKNOWN'

Neither of the Case numbers correspond with the GS Crystal.

Can we cross-reference to another crystal catalog which gives a Bulova model name to those numbers?

...the current crystal (ID) just happend to be a close fit, and now we know from the case numbers it's not that crystal.  So we watch for an ad, or go to the crystal catalogs to see if there's a name associated w/ number.

Sounds like "Unknown" for now.
