Hello,

I was super pleased to pick up this watch to add to my collection.  I have had my eye out for an Academy Award watch.  Was planning on getting a model with a gold curtain dial but when this one popped up I decided to get it and will look for one of the others later.  I believe this is an Academy Award "J".  It is in very nice shape and is working.  The bracelet is original but small so I may put a cord band on it which will technically make it a "H" but for now it will remain a "J" and I would keep the original band of course.  It has a L0 date stamp on both the case and the movement.  It is 10KGF and has a 21 jewel movement.

Many thanks to Stephen for creating this site and to all the panel members for sharing so much of your time with all of us.  If it had not been for an ad Plainsmen added I might not have recognized this watch.  I am very glad I did because I just love it.  I even found an old commercial on YouTube that showcased this watch for Mother's Day in 1951.

Thanks all!

Kathy

I'm sure this is an Academy Award, but I'm not sure which variant.  It has a neat "Corfam" band - I'm not sure if it is original or not.  I gotr this one for my wife.  She's a vintage movie fan and this is her favorite watch.  OK condition and runs well.  10K YGF Bulova case.  Case marked L0 for 1950, but movement marked A9 for 1949.  Not sure if it was common for movement and case year numbers not to match.  Perhaps this is a rplacement case?

Additional Information:

This example appears according to the ads and other entries on this site as a 1950 Bulova Academy Award “Z”. I realize this determination rests with the Panel. The caseback and movement are marked “L0”. I was unable to save or download supporting adverts from this site.

The caseback exterior is marked at the top (reverse of the 12) “10K GOLD FILLED / BULOVA / L0” and is marked at the bottom (reverse of the 6) “2859673”. The caseback interior is marked “BULOVA / FIFTH AVE / NEW YORK” along with apparently three (3) separate coded etchings by a watchmaker(s).

I have not had this example serviced after acquiring the watch earlier this month. I have cleaned the expansion band and case to a minimal extent.

The watch does wind and run; however, it was not operated but for a short period to confirm the movement would function for a several minutes. I am not aware of the service history or condition of the movement currently or prior to my acquiring the watch. The hour and minute hands can be moved both clockwise and counterclockwise and the hands to include the sub-second seem to operate properly.

The hands to include sub-second have a bluish tint.

Apparently this model was manufactured with an interior “dust cover” over the movement; however, this example did not have the cover present.

As shown in the photographs the case is rectangular with curved edges at top / bottom. Measurements are: Case: 25.56mm (with crown 27mm) X 27.13mm (35mm lug to lug), Lugs: 14.80mm, Case thickness: +/-9.00mm.

Signed Bulova: dial, crown, caseback exterior, caseback interior, movement.

The “rope” design yellow gold expansion band is marked “Speidel” on the interior of each link, in reverse direction and there are no other markings.

This watch appears to be a 1950 Academy Award "X", and was purchased in 2015 in rough condition. The movement was cleaned & oiled, the mainspring was replaced, the case was carefully cleaned & polished, and the crystal was replaced with a faceted G-S crystal. Though this watch may originally have had a leather strap, I decided on a period Kreisler Citation expansion band because 1) it is consistent with flat & chamfered surfaces of the watch; 2) It was the original band on the Academy Award "Q" & "T". This band is a good match.

Bulova Academy Award Model "T" sporting a nice NOS scissor center JB Gold plated band. Band I received on watch was a worn out low quality replacement. Both movement and case dated 1949. A couple scratches on the original crystal and wear to outside edge of crown, otherwise pretty nice and keeping time. Only double 49 date AA I have ever encountered besides Geoff's beauty!

Academy Award, but what? Case is dated L1, movement A9. My initial thought was  an "R", but face is white, has no "X" and a variation of subdial that doesn't match known examples on the site. Band is marked Bulova and watch appears to me to be all original with literally no sign it was ever worn. By the inscription, it was likely a prized sock drawer watch only worn occasionally. No brassing whatsoever. Is this an undocumented variant? Face is unnotched, so a redial is unlikely. I find no interior mars or marks indicating it was ever apart. On a scale of 1-10, watch is a solid 9.8 for condition and keeps perfect time.

I just acquired this item and I'm submiting it for the database.  I believe it to be 1950  Academy Award "W".  Besides the above information, the case back is labeled "LO"  and the movement is labeled "49",   The Kriesler band appears to be accurate, from other photos and ads.  Included with the watch was the AA display case shown in the photo.

Thanks,

Rich.
