Jamais Huilerai:(a watchmaking tip)

Submitted by Reverend Rob on November 25, 2012 - 5:58pm

Just a friendly reminder here for those of us who are concerned with our movements damaging themselves through lack of service.

My apologies to those who already know this little tidbit, this is in regards to oiling a watch. Apart from my usual rant about never oiling a dirty watch, and if it hasn't been cleaned, it is dirty, this is to do with what not to oil.

Speaking as someone who has serviced many hundreds of watches sourced from eBay, and never yet found one serviced correctly, I have seen recently an increase in watches being sold with the 'freshly serviced' indication in the description. Too many of these are also swimming in oil, but of all the pivots in the watch,

NEVER oil the pallet fork pivots. I've lost track of how many I've done recently with this error. Thanks for your attention.

A community service message from your friendly neighbourhood watchmaker.
